You “play” or pause or go forward or backward by using controls around the wheel that look like icons you’ve seen in using video machine players and other electronic devices.

iPod Classic pros and cons
Pros:
Largest iPod Capacity-wise, long battery life, “Genius” feature, and excellent value for your money, well-built, doubles as an external hard drive, and improvements to Cover Flow. The Sound quality is very good, syncing was easy
Cons:
- Some unsupported popular file formats like .ram,
- The iPod classic is the only iPod with a moving parts hard-drive. This means that if you walk around or drop your iPod when it’s playing, it could break. You need to buy a case for it, as it easily breaks after you drop it, and is not durable.
- If you intend to use it around the house, and have to move around…..Please don’t get this.
- Don’t get this one if you require a durable model, or require moving from one place to another without a pocket, and also don’t get this one if you don’t have a case.
- The main disadvantage is how long it simply takes to charge the battery of the Ipod to its optimum level. It could take as long as 4 hours just for it to fully charge when you plug it in the computer.
- Putting more than 40 GB of music on at one time probably overloaded the chip.
- Small Screen Size that has not changed in over 6 years
- No camcorder/camera
- No Fashion Colors
- No radio
- No wi-fi
- No FM Radio
- Metal back still gets scratched easily
Why to buy an ipod classic ? and Who should buy it?
Finally, I would definitely recommend the 160 gb iPod to any music fan with a large mp3 collection. Just remember to be patient when getting the artwork for all of those older albums. The iPod Classic is an excellent portable media player, it has an excellent interface, and it only costs $249 dollars. To put things in perspective, the 2011 160GB iPod Classic costs $70 dollars more than a 16GB iPod Nano, and $150 dollars less than a 64GB iPod Touch. All in all, I highly recommend this product.
So again, if you are a true music lover who wants quality over quantity, this is the iPod I recommend. You won’t regret spending a penny on it!

My ipod classic died after 1 year and two months. Just long enough for the warranty to expire. The hard drive failed. I checked with Apple and it would cost over $200 to replace the hard drive. I am going to look for MP3 with solid state memory as the hard drive is a mechanical device that can fail.
